Brugmansia – Angel’s Trumpets
The Brugmansia is a group of seven tropical plants and is considered a part of the Solanaceae family. Commonly they’re called “Angel’s Trumpets”. That name can also refer to another genus of plants that is called Datura. They can be found in South America.
Brugmansia are tree or bush formed plants, whose flowers look like trumpets. The fruits produced by these bushes are full of spikes. The plants from the Brugmansia group can reach from 3m, up to 11m. Their haired leaves are also quite big, about 30cm long and 18cm broad.
The name “Angel’s Trumpets” comes from the trumpet-like enormous flowers that can cover a length up to 50cm. The color is pure white, yellow, pink orange or red. They produce a nice and light smell, tending to lemony. The smell can be noticed in the early evening. The flowers grow single or in a couple.
Their toxicity level is very high, just like the Datura group. They contain the tropane alkaloids scopolamine and atropine. They are used by shamanic intoxication activities, but the results of intoxication may be fatal, because of the high toxic and deadly components, contained by these very beautiful, but deadly flowers.
They don’t have any kind of use, except the shamanic complexes, performed by people from west Amazonia, Jivaroan speaking natives and people of the Urarina in Peru.
